Fishing from a Kayak

One of the most popular activities here in Pacific City, Oregon is fishing. Here at The Craftsman B&B, we have an outdoor, stainless steel sink for cleaning you catch of the day. Most people fish out of a dory boat during the summer. Fall brings the Salmon up the river, so you can fish from the bank or drift boat.

I ran across this video of a guy fishing in the ocean from a Kayak. He looks pretty well set up and has mounted a video camera to his rigging. Watch him paddle out and land a Halibut. If you've ever been in a Kayak, you know trying to pull something that big up without tipping over can be a challenge. Oh, and a warning, if you get sea sick, watch this video with caution.

Thanks to pacifickayaking.com for posting and showing the world fishing in Pacific City.

It's all about the Dory

In Pacific City, Oregon, it's all about the dory. The town is full of them and a visit to Cape Kiwanda at sunrise, you're bound to see the launching into the surf. The best time is around 11:00 AM, when the wind picks up and the dory's return to the beach. Gliding through the waves and sliding up onto the beach.

This article is a few years old but showed up in my "web radar" the other day. It's a real good story about the dory fishing here in Pacific City.

You can find out more about the Dorymens Association from their website.

Learned's Boat Shop, mentioned in the article, is on facebook and so is The Craftsman B&B.

So Dory's have a long history in Pacific City, they celebrated the 50th year of the Dorymens Association this year. The Craftsman B&B's house was built in 1921. Come and live in the history or our still tiny beach town.

The Salmon are coming!

Right here in Pacific City, the Spring Salmon are running. Last fall, I wrote about the Fall Run. The ocean Coho season will open Saturday for ports south of Cape Falcon (Manzanita). Signs point to a productive season with a rare opportunity for anglers to harvest three Coho per day.

Coho Salmon

Fair catches of spring Chinook in Tillamook Bay are coming from the jetty on the soft tide series this week. Stronger tides should make the upper bay a better option by the weekend. Some sturgeon have been caught in the bay recently too.

Chinook Salmon

A good shot of Chinook salmon came through Pacific City on the Nestucca River this week. Tidewater anglers caught fair numbers. Three Rivers is also producing Chinook and should be fair through the month.

You can walk from The Craftsman B&B to the river to fish or watch the fisherman. Several popular spots where you can fish from the bank. Antoher great site is to hike Winema Beach, I wrote about it here. Here, you can watch the salmon swim from the ocean into the Nestucca Bay. Low tide is best, because they are taller than the water. You will see the seals and sea lions feasting. Just stay out of the water here, this is a very dangerous bar.

Grant is back!

Long time outdoor reporter Grant McOmie is back. If you ever lived in Oregon, you would recognize his unique voice. Well now you can hear and see him on KGW as he starts doing outdoor reports on Fridays.

Today, Grant reported on fishing the Nestucca River. That runs right through the center of Pacific City on it's journey to the Pacific Ocean. Check out his video by clicking here. He is catching a Steel head for the Cedar Creek Hatchery.

Grant is also writing for Travel Oregon, you can read his stories here.

So if you want to catch a big fish like Winter Steel head, stay with us at The Craftsman B&B, we can set you up with a guide or save a spot for your drift boat.

Salmon are running

We have had the first storm of the season in Pacific City during the last couple of days.  Big deal, right?  Well it is a big deal.  The first big flow of fresh water into the ocean triggers the brains of the salmon who are ready to spawn.  That means Pacific City will be full of fisherman trying to get the catch of the day.

Fishing for salmon in the Pacific Ocean was closed this year in Oregon and California.  The bays and rivers are open, so this is the first chance to catch Steelhead and Fall Chinook.  Come stay with me and you can walk a few blocks to the Nestucca river and bay so you can toss in a line.  Or get a guide.  Last week the bay was busy, this week it will be packed.

Fishing with your buddies is one thing.  We suggest you bring your significant other and stay with us, here at The Craftsman B&B.  We don't have lace or dollies, so you don't have to worry about anything to frilly.  We even have a fish cleaning sink.  The non-fisher person can explore the restaurants, shops and galleries in town or head out on the Three Capes Scenic Drive.

So it's simple really, you get to fish and make your partner happy with a nice relaxing stay in a B&B.  Can it get any easier?  I don't think so.  Click here.
